Movie: The Green Square Mile
7:00 p.m.
The Green Square Mile, a documentary written and co-produced by well-known local Irish historian Dan Casey, chronicles a part of American and Irish-American history which has been largely forgotten but which tells in microcosm the story of Irish immigration to this country. Through interviews with neighbors, community leaders, and local kids -- like U.S. Olympic hockey gold medal winner Jackie O’Callahan – the film captures the resilience and determination of the Charlestown Irish. It not only traces the rise of the Irish as a political force but also relives the crises of forced busing, urban renewal, and urban crime. The film, funded largely by the population of Charlestown and released only a few months ago, was a selection of the Boston Irish Film Festival and has already been screened in Boston, Ireland, and Northern Ireland to great acclaim.
Due to a scheduling conflict this film is being offered instead of the lecture by Dan Casey originally scheduled

Lecture: Who Are the Irish, Really?
Noon
In popular culture as in tourist shop commerce, “Celtic” and “Irish” are near synonyms; there is, however, little evidence of “Celtic” migrations to Ireland. The true roots of “Irishness” traced over the centuries are, if truth be told, both more diverse and more revealing.
Mr. Robertson is a retired member of the UVM faculty who still
teaches an occasional course in Early Ireland.

A lively group on stage, Danú - named for the mother of all ancient Irish gods - features gorgeous vocals paired with accordion, fiddle, bouzouki, bodhran, guitar, uilleann pipes, flute, and whistles.
